A month in Vienna - Oct 2018
Friend Walter Sauer and I are part of a 4 member group writing the history of Beyers Naudé during the years when he was banned (1977-1984). Contrary to the apartheid state thinking it had clipped his wings, Beyers became an invaluable asset to the political underground. We are writing about the more than 100 letters Beyers smuggled out of South Africa during those years. He reports on his actions, insights, his requests, and more.
No publication date for the book yet - we are still writing.
But I had the opportunity to spend 27 days in Vienna with Walter. We drafted and debated what we hope will be a well-referenced contribution to what South Africans call 'struggle history'.
Below reflects the varied impressions that the visit to Vienna left me with.
